Tethered Alcohol Ignition Interlock Device
Operating vehicles and machinery while under the influence of alcohol in the workplace is the largest contributor to economic damage and cost of lives globally. In Europe alone, the impact is estimated to cost in excess of Euro 60 billion annually. In response, a number of countries have implemented alcohol Ignition
Interlock Devices (IID's) in workplaces and offender programmes, preventing operators of vehicles, buses and coaches, taxis, and heavy road and construction equipment, from starting or driving their vehicles or equipment while under the influence of alcohol.
Together with the norwegian company Alås, we designed the shape, ergonomics and ease-of-use of the ignition interlock device. From an early concept phase, we were heavily involved gathering user insight from lorry and taxi drivers, to understand how this device can best fit their everyday environment. Careful consideration was taken on issues such as docking placement, location of the disposable mouthpieces, as well as integrating the PCBA in an efficient manner.
